John Wesley School: A Place to Learn, Grow and Belong
John Wesley School is a Christian, independent primary school in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal, serving families across Pinetown and the greater Highway community since 1977. We offer English-medium education in a caring, co-educational environment, from Grade 00 through to Grade 7.
Our purpose extends beyond academic achievement. We help learners develop the knowledge, confidence, character and integrity they need to navigate a changing world and contribute positively to their communities.
As a mission of Pinetown Methodist Church, the teachings of Jesus Christ underpin our school’s ethos. Through daily learning and relationships, we nurture kindness, honesty, compassion and respect for oneself and others.
We are proud of our academic tradition and committed to building strong foundations for high school and beyond. Our dedicated teachers encourage each learner to develop their abilities, think independently and approach new challenges with confidence.
We recognise that children flourish when their development is balanced. Academic learning is complemented by opportunities for social, emotional, physical, creative and spiritual growth. Sport and extra-curricular activities encourage participation, teamwork and a sense of belonging.
Learning support is an important part of our approach. Alongside support within mainstream classes, we offer a dedicated class for Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN), providing an alternative for children who find mainstream schooling challenging.
Our pre-primary programme offers a nurturing introduction to school life through play, discovery and age-appropriate activities. Although our Grade 000/00 class closed at the end of 2023, renewed demand from families led us to reintroduce Grade 00. We welcome children from the age of three, turning four before 1 July of their admission year. Grade 00 learners join our integrated pre-primary environment, receiving activities and support suited to their stage of development as they prepare for Grade R and, ultimately, Grade 1.
Since opening our doors in 1977, John Wesley School has welcomed children of all races. This longstanding commitment to inclusion remains central to our identity as a proudly South African school, where diversity is valued and mutual respect is encouraged.
