Intermediate Phase

Grades 4 to 7 – Growing in Confidence, Independence and Responsibility

The Intermediate and Senior Phase is an important stage in a child’s development.During these years, learners become more independent, more confident and more aware of the world around them. They also begin to take greater responsibility for their learning, behaviour and choices.At John Wesley School, we support learners as they grow academically, socially, emotionally and spiritually.

Growing in Responsibility and Independence

Learners are encouraged to:

• take responsibility for their schoolwork;
• complete homework carefully and on time;
• become more organised and independent;
• work well with others;
• make responsible choices; and
• show respect for teachers and fellow learners.

These skills help prepare them for the greater demands of high school.

Learning in Grades 4 to 7

As learners move through this phase, the curriculum becomes broader and more challenging.Subjects include:

• English;
• Home Language;
• Mathematics;
• Natural Sciences;
• Technology;
• Social Sciences;
• Life Skills and Life Orientation; and
• Economic and Management Sciences in Grade 7.

Different teaching and assessment methods are used to help learners understand new concepts and develop strong academic skills.

Parents Remain Important Partners

Although children become more independent during these years, support from home remains very important.Parents are encouraged to:

• provide a quiet time and place for homework;
• check that homework is completed;
• encourage regular reading;
• read with their children when possible; and
• stay in regular contact with the school.

Reading in both English and Home Language is especially important for developing vocabulary, comprehension and communication skills.Joining a local library and encouraging children to choose books they enjoy is another valuable way to support learning.

Supporting Learners Who Need Help

Good communication between parents and the school is important.If we are concerned about a learner’s academic progress, behaviour or emotional well-being, parents may be invited to meet with our School Support Team (SST).The team works together to understand the learner’s needs and recommend the best way forward.Support may include:

• extra academic support;
• counselling;
• an Educational Psychologist assessment;
• Occupational Therapy or other professional assessments; or
• other appropriate interventions.

Our aim is always to work together with parents to give each learner the best possible support.

Faith and Character

As a Christian school, we believe education is about more than academic achievement.Learners are encouraged to develop:

• honesty;
• responsibility;
• kindness;
• respect;
• creativity;
• confidence; and
• strong Christian values.

Prayer, Scripture and Christian teaching form part of everyday school life and help learners develop spiritually as well as academically.

Sport, Culture and School Life

Learners are encouraged to take part in a variety of sporting and cultural activities.Participation helps children develop teamwork, confidence, discipline and a sense of belonging.

Preparing Future Leaders

Our Grade 6 learners take part in a leadership programme that prepares them for their senior roles in Grade 7.The programme focuses on:

• teamwork;
• responsibility;
• accountability;
• leadership; and
• serving others.

By the time our learners complete Grade 7, our aim is for them to leave John Wesley School as confident, responsible and caring young people who are ready for the next stage of their education.
