Pre-Primary School

Starting school is a big step for both children and their families.

At John Wesley School, we understand how important it is for parents to know that their child is safe, happy and cared for during the school day.

Our Pre-Primary provides a nurturing Christian environment where children can learn through play, build

confidence, make friends and develop the skills they will need for formal schooling.

We combine love and encouragement with structure, guidance and age-appropriate learning.

Grade 00 and Grade R

Children may join John Wesley School when they are ready to enter Grade 00 or Grade R.

• Grade 00: Children must turn 4 before 1 July.
• Grade R: Children must turn 5 before 1 July.

Our Pre-Primary forms part of John Wesley School, allowing children to move naturally from their early years into the Foundation Phase and then through to Grade 7.

This gives children the opportunity to grow in a familiar school environment with strong Christian values and a sense of belonging.

Why is Grade R so important?

Grade R provides an important foundation for Grade 1.

Children learn much more than letters and numbers. They also learn how to:

🌱 follow instructions and classroom routines
🌱 share and take turns
🌱 make friends and work with others
🌱 communicate their needs and ideas
🌱 develop confidence and independence
🌱 improve fine and gross motor skills
🌱 begin developing reading, writing and number skills

Grade R also helps children become comfortable with the school environment and prepares them for the expectations of Grade 1.

In South Africa, Grade R now forms part of compulsory schooling. The official admission age for Grade R is four years old, turning five by 30 June of the year of admission. Compulsory attendance applies from Grade R in the year in which a child turns six.

Learning Through Play

Young children learn best when learning is active and enjoyable.

Through play, children develop:

• language and communication skills
• early maths skills
• creativity and imagination
• problem-solving skills
• physical coordination
• social skills
• confidence and independence

Play is not separate from learning — for young children, play is an important part of learning.

How Can I Help My Child Become School-Ready?

Parents can help prepare children for school through simple everyday activities.

Try to:

• read to your child every day;
• allow your child to help with cooking and measuring ingredients;
• encourage drawing, colouring, cutting and puzzles;
• give your child opportunities to play with other children;
• encourage them to dress, eat and use the bathroom independently;
• talk to your child and encourage them to express themselves; and
• practise taking turns, sharing and following simple instructions.

These everyday experiences help children develop skills they will use in the classroom.

Is My Child Ready for School?

Every child develops differently, but before entering formal schooling it is helpful if a child can:

• use the bathroom independently;
• dress and feed themselves with little assistance;
• say their name and age;
• listen to and follow simple instructions;
• play and share with other children;
• cope with small changes in routine;
• communicate their needs;
• hold a pencil or crayon comfortably;
• copy simple shapes and patterns; and
• recognise some letters and numbers.

School readiness is about much more than academic ability. Emotional, social, physical and communication skills are equally important.

Annual school fees: R45 100

Fees may be paid over 11 months at R4 100 per month.
