Junior Primary

    Home Junior Primary

    A buzzing, busy environment

Junior School copyAt John Wesley School, the Foundation Phase is a buzzing, busy environment where children are encouraged to improve their general knowledge and social skills.

Each child is taught to read and write in English and isiZulu, and Afrikaans is introduced in Grade Three.

Our learners are taught to apply their phonics skills to decode unfamiliar words when reading, to take note of punctuation and to read with understanding.

A variety of teaching methods and printed workbooks are used to ensure that each child understands and enjoys working with numbers.

New concepts taught in literacy and numeracy are reinforced during lessons such as computers in our technologically advanced computer lab.

Our children are taught to be independent and they are expected to read and follow instructions written in English.

Our Foundation Phase children all learn to swim and participate in team sports such as soccer, cricket and netball.

As in the Intersen Phase of the school, children with particular challenges, be they behavioural, academic or emotional, are catered for through our School Support Team structure.

Instilling strong Christian values in our children is a core focus of our school and is considered by us to be a vital component in the development of the whole child.

Children identified as having experienced emotional trauma are afforded access to a trained counsellor, who visits the school on a weekly basis.

We endeavour to identify challenges facing our children as early as possible during their school careers so that we can heal or remediate them and ensure that they continue to develop and flourish.
