Foundation Phase

Building Strong Foundations for Learning, an important stage in every child’s school journey.

 

At John Wesley School, our Foundation Phase is a busy, caring and supportive environment where lear

ners develop the academic, social, emotional and spiritual skills they need for the years ahead. We encourage children to become confident, curious and increasingly independent learners. Building Strong Language Skills: Children are taught to read and write in English and isiZulu, with Afrikaans introduced in Grade 3.

Learners are taught to:

• • use phonics to work out unfamiliar words;
  • read with understanding;
  • recognise and use punctuation;
  • build vocabulary;
  • develop handwriting and writing skills; and
  • grow in confidence when speaking and communicating.

Regular reading is encouraged both at school and at home, as strong language skills support learning across all subjects. Developing Confidence in Mathematics. Mathematics is taught through a variety of methods so that children can understand new concepts in practical and meaningful ways. Learners develop skills in:

• number work;
• problem-solving;
• patterns;
• measurement;
• shape and space; and
• everyday mathematical thinking.

We aim to help children build confidence with numbers and develop a positive attitude towards Mathematics. Learning Through Technology. Technology is used to support and reinforce classroom learning. Our computer facilities give learners opportunities to practise important skills, explore concepts and become comfortable using technology as part of their education. Growing in Independence: Foundation Phase learners are encouraged to take increasing responsibility for themselves and their work.

They learn to:

• follow instructions;
• complete tasks carefully;
• take responsibility for belongings;
• develop good classroom routines;
• work independently; and
• ask for help when needed.

These early habits help prepare learners for the greater independence expected in the Intermediate and Senior Phases. Sport and Physical Development: Physical activity is an important part of a child’s development. Foundation Phase learners are encouraged to take part in activities such as:

• Athletics
• swimming;
• soccer;
• mini-cricket
• netball and hockey.

Sport helps develop fitness, coordination, teamwork, confidence and a sense of belonging. Supporting Every Learner. Children develop at different rates, and some may need additional support during their school journey. If concerns arise about a learner’s academic progress, emotional well-being, or behaviour, we can discuss them through our School Support Team (SST).

The School Support Team works with teachers and parents to identify the best way to support the learner.

Where appropriate, support may include:

• extra academic assistance;
• counselling;
• professional assessment; or
• referral to an appropriate specialist.

We aim to identify concerns early and work together with families so that each child has the best opportunity

to develop and flourish.

Growing in Faith and Character. Christian values are an important part of everyday life at John Wesley School.

Learners are encouraged to develop:

• kindness;
• honesty;
• respect;
• responsibility;
• compassion;
• forgiveness; and
• confidence in their faith.

Prayer, Scripture and Christian teaching help support the spiritual development of our learners and encourage them to care for others. Preparing Learners for the next stage. By the end of the Foundation Phase, we aim for learners to have developed strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, independence, confidence, and character. These skills prepare them for the next stage of their education in the Intermediate and Senior Phase.
