Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) EXPLAINED

If your child is between 8 and 11 years of age and any of the scenarios below apply to you, we can help…

    • Your child is struggling to cope at school and you’ve been asked to have them assessed by an Educational Psychologist. The report indicates that your child is not coping in mainstream schooling and a recommendation has been made for you to find an LSEN school for your child.
    • You are concerned about your child’s progress at school, he/she has to repeat a grade, or has already repeated a grade, and is still not making progress. You need advice on the next step…
    • You have been advised to send your child to a “special educational needs school” and you are not sure what to do.

If your child has been identified as an LSEN learner

Our school has an LSEN class specifically catering to learners who struggle in mainstream schooling. The LSEN class is not a remedial class, remedial education is typically a short-term intervention for children with correctable learning challenges, who ultimately reintegrate into mainstream education once these challenges have been overcome. The LSEN class is specifically geared toward helping learners who have been assessed by an Educational Psychologist, who in turn has recommended that they be placed in an LSEN class environment where they can continue to learn at their own pace and at a level they are comfortable with. This will enable them to reach the required level of development that will ensure their progression to an LSEN high school, where they will continue to develop the skills that will allow them to become productive members of society.

    LSEN learners and high school

Parents will be encouraged to apply to an LSEN High School once their children reach high school age and are ready to progress. An LSEN high school promotes academic and skills development and learners ultimately graduate with a practical skillset that matches their talents and their interests, this offers opportunities for them in vocations that require technical expertise. These include engine construction, welding, brick making, agriculture, cooking, sewing, crafting, hairdressing, and art. This technical training is incorporated into an academic programme that is particularly designed to suit the LSEN learner. LSEN graduates fulfill the need in society for scarce skills, they generally have excellent prospects once they enter the job market and they make a valuable contribution to the economy of our country.

LSEN learners are an integral part of school life

John Wesley School cares about the future of all young South Africans. Its LSEN class has a maximum of 16 learners, all of whom have the benefit of both a teacher and a teacher assistant guiding their progress. The LSEN class at John Wesley School integrates fully into all aspects of everyday school life by participating in assemblies, choir, sports and arts, and cultural activities, along with the rest of the school.

    How much will it cost?

School fees for LSEN for the 2023 Academic year are R41 800 per annum or R3 800 per month over 11 months from 1 January until 1 November.
