At John Wesley School, we believe that strong schools begin with well-trained, passionate educators. We are therefore delighted to be hosting
student teachers who are currently completing their practical teaching experience with us.
We are currently mentoring students from Stadio, Varsity College (Emeris), and the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN). Their time in our classrooms provides invaluable hands-on experience, allowing them to observe, assist, and teach under the guidance of experienced educators while gaining a realistic understanding of the responsibilities and rewards of the teaching profession.
Practical training is a vital part of teacher education. It is where theory meets the reality of the classroom, where aspiring teachers learn classroom management, professional conduct, and how to support learners academically and emotionally. It is also where they begin developing the confidence, compassion, and leadership that great teachers require.
Their presence also enriches the experience of our learners. With additional adults in the classroom, learners benefit from more individual attention, small group support, and fresh teaching approaches. Student teachers bring new energy, current academic insights, and enthusiasm, which creates a dynamic learning environment while still being anchored by the experience and oversight of our qualified staff.
In South Africa, where the quality of education remains a national concern, we believe it is important to invest intentionally in the training of future teachers. By sharing our knowledge, experience, and professional standards, we hope to help shape educators who will carry these values into the schools and communities they will one day serve.
Our influence in teacher development also extends beyond the walls of John Wesley School. Through a longstanding relationship with UKZN, our Deputy Principal, Mr Reed, was recently invited to address more than 1 400 teachers in training at the Edgewood Campus on the importance of professional conduct in the teaching profession.
We are proud to play a meaningful role in shaping the future of education.
