Travelling to school in traditional attire on HERITAGE DAY?

The wearing of Civvies and Traditional clothing on a school day

In a dangerous environment, in which criminals are known to prey on young children, it is very important for us to ensure the safety of our learners, especially our girls, which is why they usually wear a school uniform that is very modest and conservative in design and doesn’t attract much attention.

    Safety comes first

When children attend school in “civvies” there are very strict regulations governing the wearing of “civvies” to ensure that our learners do not wear anything inappropriate and too revealing that may attract unwanted attention, especially when they are traveling to and from school. Traditional and cultural dress cannot be subject to these regulations because their design is based on historical customs and interpretations and they cannot, and shouldn’t be, modified to conform to modern trends. We believe that traditional and cultural dress must accurately and authentically reflect the rich traditions of the cultures they represent. The reason why we require our learners to change into their traditional/cultural attire at school is to ensure that they can freely express their traditional and cultural norms, in the safety of the school environment, without attracting unwelcome attention in the public domain. It is a sad modern reality but one we have to take into consideration as a responsible educational institution.
